BCU undergoes accreditation

October 16-17, 2017. These were “red-letter days” for Baguio Central University- the accreditation visit by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA): Formal Visit for BS HRM and BS Business Administration programs; Preliminary Visit for BSEd and BEEd and Liberal Arts programs.

The 10 areas evaluated by the PACUCOA accrediting tea, were: 1) Philosophy and Objectives; 2) Faculty; 3) Instruction; 4) Laboratory; 5) Library; 6) Research ; 7) Student Services; 8) Social Orientation and Community Involvement; 9) Physical Plant and Facilities; and 10) Organization and Administration.

The accrediting team was headed by Dr. Ferdinand Somido who evaluated the areas on Philosophy and Objectives and Organization and Administration. The other members were: Dr. Ferdinand Lacuata- Faculty, Instruction and Laboratories (BSEd and BEEd); Ms. Vivian Estacio- Faculty, Instruction and Laboratories (Liberal Arts); Dr. Rolando Robledo- Faculty, Instruction and Laboratories (Business Administration); Ms. LlailaMalabanan- Faculty, Instruction and Laboratories (HRM); Ms. Lourdes Fumera- Library (all programs); Dr. Dante Silva- Physical and Facilities Research (all programs); and Dr. Erwin Quendangan- Student Services and Social Orientation and Community Involvement.

During the two-day visit, the accrediting team perused and scrutinized the voluminous documents and exhibits in order for them to determine the extent of compliance of the programs to the requirements and standards of accreditation. Other activities were consultation with students, faculty and non-teaching employees and class observations by the accrediting team.

As a matter of policies, the result of the accreditation will be sent to the university by the PACUCOA Board of Directors within four to six months after the visit.

The University Accreditation Team was chaired by Dr. Elma Donaal, Vice President for Academic Affairs. The members were: Dr. Lourdes Trajano (BSEd, BEEd and Liberal Arts); Ms. Jocelyn Ang (HRM);Dr. Marilou dela Pena (Research); Engr. Onofre Rillera (Physical Plant and Facilities); Ms. Jamaica dela Pena (Student Services); Ms. Clarence Fagyan (Library); Dr. Manion Alcantara (Social Orientation and Community Involvement); Dr. Perfecto Lopez (Philosophy and Objectives and Organization and Administration). Ms. Linda Tokyas served as the documents and exhibits office.

The Formal Visit is for Level I Accredited Status while the Preliminary Visit id for Candidate Status. The official level of accreditation is issued by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippiness. (FAAP) to the institution.

Some benefits of Level I/II accreditation (CHED Memorandum Order No. 01,s,2005) are: full administrative deregulation by CHED; financial deregulation in terms of setting tuition and other school fees; authority to revise the curriculum with CHED approval (with some provisions); authority to graduate students from the accredited course/ program of study without prior approval by CHED and without need of Special Orders; priority in the awards of grants/subsidies from CHED; right to use its publications and advertisements the word “ACCREDITED” pursuant to CHED policies and rules; and, limited visitation, inspection and/ or supervision by CHED.
